There is no doubt that Florida is #1 when it comes to best beaches in the US. Not to mention Sarasota’s Siesta Key beach was yet again the #1 beach according to TripAdvisors Traveler’s Choice Awards 2017. In general, Florida landed seven out of the top 10 beaches in this year’s awards. 343 beaches worldwide were in the running’s for Travel’s Choice and Florida came out on top by far. Siesta key is by far one of Sarasota’s most prized gems.
Fun Facts
- Siesta Key beach was the nations #1 beach in 2011.
- 99% is the percentage of quartz that make up Siesta’s fluffy white sand.
- 2.2 million visitors visit Siesta Key beach annually.
- Siesta Key is made up of four main districts: Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, Turtle Beach, and Siesta Key Village
- It’s estimated that the sand on Siesta Beach is millions of years old, and started in the Appalachians and flowed down the rivers and was eventually deposited on the shores of Siesta Key.
- Siesta Key was named the #1 beach in the U.S in the annual ratings by Dr. Beach.
Siesta Key Information
Siesta Key is easy to reach form 2 main roads in Sarasota. You can either take Bee Ridge Rd West (Exit 207 on I-75). Stay on Bee Ridge, cross over US 41 and follow the twists, bends and signs onto Siesta Dr. then go over the bridge. The other way on the island, take Clark Rd West (Exit 205 on I-75) which becomes Stickney Point Rd, go over the Stickney Point Bridge. Midnight Pass Rd is the long road that runs North & South on Siesta Key.
Siesta Beach, the public beach in the center of the Island has lifeguards on duty all year round, volleyball nets, tennis courts, a playground and shady spots for picnics. There are also bathrooms, food and concession available making it a quite comfortable stay at this beach for an extended period of time. There is a 800 car parking lot but it fills up quickly. Prepare to arrive early or you will have to follow people that are leaving to get their spot. (not much fun but we’ve all done it).
Crescent Beach
A short walk south along the beach from the Siesta Key Public Beach is Crescent Beach. This beach is a popular starting point for snorkelers. It is also very popular and usually filled with visitors spread across the beach. A lot of fun activities usually go on like jet skiing, parasailing, canoeing and kayaking.
Turtle Beach
At the southern end of the beach is Turtle Beach, the sand here is a bit coarser, but means the shelling is better. Turtle Beach is also quieter, and although there are no lifeguards or food concessions, the site is perfect for family outings with ample parking, abundant picnic areas, dune walkovers, a playground and public restrooms. Turtle Beach has some of the highest beach dunes in the area.

You are prepared to have a fun and active vacation full of long bike rides exploring Florida’s gulf coast. But you have no idea where the best bike trails are in Bradenton and Sarasota. Finally planning to take that beach vacation you have been dreaming about all year long. You got the perfect swimsuit, first things first of course, but what other essentials do you need? No worries, we have got you covered. Of course, there are the easy things to remember such as sun tan lotion and swimsuit cover-ups but here are 10 other essential items to remember when going to the beach.
Top 10 Essentials
1) Phone Battery Charger: No one likes a dead phone while at the beach. How are you going to snap that amazing sunset photo on Instagram or listen to your favorite jams? You need back up, and that’s where the phone battery charger comes in handy.
2) Bluetooth speaker: You can’t blast your favorite jams without one of these. Ensure your beach day is filled with all the sounds you love. Breaking waves and beach jams.
3) Sunscreen Lip balm: You may have remembered the sunscreen but what about the lip balm? No one likes chapped lips. NO ONE! This item is crucial and could create a not so fun day if forgotten.
4) Reading Material: What better way to catch up on your favorite books than at the beach? (There is no better way.) Break out the beach chair and umbrella and vu-la book reading paradise!
5) Wristlet: This item is the perfect for storing your most important items such as license, keys cash and that lip balm. Don’t make the mistake of throwing your small items into a big bag. You’ll never find what you’re looking for without having to dump the whole thing.
6) Snacks: Probably the most important out of all of this is making sure you have food. Sometimes that 2 hour beach trip turns more into a 4-5-hour trip. Which means you’ll be needing to replenish some energy after spending that much time in the sun.
7) Water resistant phone case/pouch: Pretty much all the elements that make up a beach can destroy your phone. Between the water, sun and sand your phone is prone to damage. There is no better way to protect it than getting a resistant phone case or pouch to store it in.
8) Moisturizer with SPF : Although sunscreen is great we must say this stuff is much better. Salt water and the sun dry out your skin, it’s important to use this before and after heading to the beach to revitalize your skin. It also helps keep a tan!
9) Sunglasses: While the beach is a beautiful site to see, you don’t want to spend your time squinting at everything. Pack a pair of polarized sunglasses to help keep the squinting down.
10) Beach Bag: This is what makes carrying all the items above doable. Having the perfect bag makes a difference. Find one that is large enough for your towels, speaker and snacks and has plenty of pockets for all the other small items.

While most vacation homes offer ample benefits for travelers they can often cause plenty of headaches if you don’t book with the right company or owner. Did you know more than half of Americans would rather book a vacation home over hotel. For purposes, such as more space, privacy and lower rates. It’s vital to ask about rental policies that can vary by company. We have chosen the top 5 questions to ask before booking a vacation home for a hassle free vacation. We’ve also taken the initiative to let you know how our hassle-free process goes as well.
Question 1: What is your check in process and how do I get the keys?
For some of you this question may seem like a no brainer but other travelers may have endured the struggle of checking in at a property. For instance, some companies/owners will just give you a door code, others have a physical office to check in, or maybe keys have been left at the property in a lock box for you to retrieve and check in is done online. It’s important to question how you are going to get access to the property. As for us we have a physical office you come to register and obtain the keys. From there we give you directions and any information for the home that you will need. The process takes about five minutes and is hassle free.
Question 2: What equipment is available for use?
The last thing you want to do at the start of your vacation is to walk into a home with no cooking utensils, toiletry or towels. Some companies/owners don’t offer the extra equipment to use and it could leave you spending more money than you had planned for. Ask before you book, that way you can plan ahead for items you may or may not need. Here at Gulf Coast all our homes are fully equipped with kitchen utensils including cups, plates and silverware. Our homes also have plenty of towels and bedding for your use and we supply starter rolls of toiletry for your convenience.
Question 3: Where is the nearest grocery market and best places to eat?
When vacationing at a new place it’s important to find out about local attractions and places to eat and shop before you book a home. Sometimes off season rentals will be near marketplaces that are only open a certain time of the year, as the same with restaurants. This is often forgot about until too late. Lucky for us, here on the gulf coast most of our shops, restaurants and grocery stores are open year-round. We also put the nearest and best places to eat and shop in your guestbook at the rental home. Included is a list of local area attractions for those looking for the best hot spots in town.
Question 4: Is there insurance available to purchase?
How often do you drop or break things at your own home? Accidents happen and things go wrong all the time, and it can happen at a vacation home as well. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Purchasing insurance can often be a good option for those traveling with kids or pets. Finding out whether you can purchase insurance is important and is a question worth asking before booking a home. Also, be sure to read about the coverage the insurance offers.
Question 5: What cleanup is expected upon departure?
This is a question you probably don’t think of until you recieve a check out list of procedures. It’s important to find out what is expected upon your departure to avoid any costly fees or charges to your security deposit. Either ask the rental company/owner or make sure to read your rental agreement thoroughly.
When it comes to the vacation you have been waiting for all year long you want everything to be perfect. No problems, no hassle just smooth sailing. Often friends and family and even strangers can give you some iffy travel advice that you probably shouldn’t take. No fear, were here to help you decipher what travel advice you should avoid. Let’s dig in.
“You’re on vacation, treat yourself”
First off, we’ve all heard this phrase, “treat yourself and just live a little”. Which in some ways is true, but most people can’t afford to spend like crazy while on vacation. It’s nice to step a way from reality and splurge on yourself but you eventually have to go back to reality. I’m all about enjoying the experiences but not about that high credit card bill you get afterwards. Instead, plan some of the hot spots you want to hit and set a budget. If you have money left afterwards then you can go and do some of those things that didn’t make the list. This way you are treating yourself and saving yourself the stress of receiving that high credit card bill later on.
“Book the cheapest flight to save some money”
Who hasn’t been told this line before? While it may sound like a good idea to save a little money, it doesn’t always turn out the way you plan. Often the cheapest flights are scheduled for the worst times of the day. Resulting in wasted vacation time. Additionally, during the booking process additional fees are usually tacked on. By the time you’re done it equals to be just as much as any other flight. Not to mention the cancellation policy or request to change a flight is nearly impossible and expensive with cheaper airlines. Instead find the time that suits you best and one that gives you the most time to enjoy your vacation and beware of the hidden policy’s and fees.
“Try to do as much as possible”
This piece of travel advice is probably the worst unless you enjoy feeling exhausted and tired during your vacation. There is no sense in trying to see and do everything, it’s not going to happen. There is simply not enough time. These mini breaks from life are meant to be fun and relaxing not chaotic and rushed. Sometimes less is more. Stick to the wish list you created above and map your days out that way.
“Stay away from strangers”
Although safety is your number one concern it doesn’t mean you should isolate yourself to the point that you will be missing out on the best restaurants and hidden gems of the city. Locals have an abundance of information on where to go and eat. Don’t be the awkward person in the photo to the right. The only way to really get to know a city is if you engage with the people that live there. Just be mindful of who and where you ask questions so you don’t run into any trouble. Don’t be afraid to ask the vacation rental company or hotel staff, the Starbucks barista or taxi driver.
